Kirthi Shihlpa Pillai

My artwork takes a critical view of social, political and cultural issues. In my work, I focus on Singaporean childhood. My works reproduce familiar visual signs, arranging them into new conceptually layered pieces. Currently, I am referencing conceptual artists like Shilpa Gupta.

Most of the time, my themes are combined into a theatrical approached drawing using very simple colors such as the monotones. The color black establishes a hidden, secretive meaning and as a result it creates an air of mystery.

While I use very little materials, the processes in each project focuses on my message and are all very research based on the issue itself. Although there may not be many materials and techniques involved, my projects are all linked by recurring formal concerns and subject matter.

Each project often consists of multiple works, often in a series grouped around specific themes and meanings. During research and production, new areas of interest arise and lead to the next body of work.
