My work is about the beauty of the world around us. Although this may sound simple, making a beautiful painting is not. I’ve painted long enough to know my preferred subject and style. I’m inspired by nature and color, so it makes sense that I often paint realistic florals. I’m also intrigued by human emotions and the way a painting can suggest a story just by the body language of a figure, or by a small object included in the picture. Color also conveys emotion and I like to build up complex colors by painting in thin layers of oil paint.

Although I now work full time as an artist, I have a Ph.D. in microbiology and I worked for many years as a research scientist. My training in science taught me to observe carefully, which is important in painting. I’ve been painting steadily for the past twelve years, and I most often find inspiration from my garden and my home. I show my work at the Los Gatos Museums Gallery in Los Gatos, California and I’m a member of both the California Art Club and Oil Painters of America.

I think art should be visual above all. I’m not always “trying to say” something specific in my paintings. I want my paintings to communicate visually and I’m happiest when people react to them viscerally. If another artist says I have good technique, I’m flattered. But if I watch someone taking their first look at my painting and immediately they smile or say “Wow,” then I’m overjoyed. That’s the reaction I’m aiming for!
